How to connect a 3.5mm microphone to your phone utilizing the MicroBOOM

To connect a microphone to your phone using the MicroBOOM, you'll need a few key pieces of equipment but first, let’s check what kind of adapter you will need.

Check Your Smartphone's Connector:

The first step is to check what kind of connector your smartphone has for plugging in a microphone.

  • USB-C port - This oval shaped port is emerging as the new standard for smartphones. iPhones 15 and Android phones use USB-C.

  • Lightning port - This WAS the proprietary connector found on iPhones. If you have an iPhone 14 or earlier, you will need a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter.

Next step, make sure you have the required equipment:

1. Smartphone Adapters made by Cubilux:

We don’t recommend just a single adapter, we recommend the Cubilux adapters. It converts lightning or USB-C to 3.5mm TRS and gives you a headphone jack to monitor playback.

USB-C to TRS:  Andriod & iPhone 15

Lightning to TRS: iPhone 14 and earlier

2. Microphone

You need a lightweight 3.5mm microphone. We recommend microphones around 40 grams (1.5oz). There are several great options and here are a couple we have tried:

Movo VXR10 Universal Shotgun Mic

Rode Video Micro

Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Video Microphone

 MicroBOOM with iphone rig

3. MicroBOOM

The patented MicroBOOM is the world's first on-camera, internally cabled, audio boom pole designed for instantaneous interviewing.  It is super lightweight, which is what makes this works well. It is compatible for all cameras including mobile phones, mirrorless, camcorders, ENG or Cinema Cameras and 3.5mm microphones.

The MicroBOOM is great for one person crews whether you are shooting an interview or in selfie style, for social media, festivals, trade shows, weddings, sports, corporate videos, reporting the latest news, or capturing memorable events.  No fiddling with mic'ing people up!
